Online Data Sources

I realize this has been discussed many times in the past and that the following services have already been included in GM:

World Imagery
World Street Map
World Topo Map

I see that there are many more map types available at:

http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/services/map-services

What exactly is the correct way of adding (for example) the following National Geographic set as a 'New Source' to GM?

http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/NatGeo_World_Map/MapServer/tile/{Z}/{Y}/{X}

Thanks,

Bruce.

    Bruce,

Add those as a 'Google Maps' source and specify the tile URL as 'http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/NatGeo_World_Map/MapServer/tile/'. The maximum level is likely 17 for that one and the image format is JPG. Worked fine for me like that.

    Thanks,

Thank you both for that very usefull Tip !
I succeed in connecting most of services available at http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/, but some doesn't work with the above's Mike method. Maybe because these are not in Google earth tiles format or something else. One that I would particulary like to connect anymore is "http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Elevation/ESRI_Elevation_World/GlobeServer", but I don't manage to do it. Is it possible to connect it to GM and how ?

One other question, Do you know where to find others free web services for world beautiful topo maps tiles ?

    Thanks

The ESRI Elevation World data set appears to be something different for the display of elevation data and not a normal image tile set. However if you use the ASTER GDEM or SRTM data sets already built into Global Mapper you should get similar or better data.

Can anyone confirm that the method used above in Mike's post at 03-01-2013, 07:11 AM still works?

I have found the exact URL listed in the message above on ESRI's webpage with the listing of the zoom levels:

    NatGeo_World_Map (MapServer)

I have added the "/tile/" to the end of the URL, as indicated in Mike's response. I've selected image type as "jpg" and set Max Zoom Level to 16 through 18 for various attempts. I have set the "Native Projection of Source" to both "Web Mercator" and Lat Long WGS84. After testing the NatGeo_World_Map layer above, I also tried "Canvas/World_Light_Gray_Base" and "USA_Topo_Maps". None of the 20-30 options I have tried will allow me to connect.

I have downloaded the GM v14.1.6 trial, registered for two week trial, to see if a newer version would help. It does not. I have also turned off my firewall to check for interferences. I still cannot connect to these tiled sources. I note in the error message pasted below that it mentions "OSM" for tile source, but I selected Google Maps tile as the "Select Online Source Type" when creating the new source.

    Any hints would be appreciated.

    Example Error Dialog:
Error loading OSM Tile data source.
Unable to parse OSM server URL, make sure it is valid.
    OSMTileOverlay.cpp - 486
    Version: v14.1.6 (32-bit)

I took a look and found a bug adding new OSM/TMS/Google Maps (they are all related, hence the OSM error message) sources in the latest installers. I've got that fixed now. I have placed a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14.zip with the latest changes for you to try. Simply download that file and extract the contents into your existing v14.xx installation folder to give it a try. If you are using the 64-bit v14 version there is a new build at http://www.bluemarblegeo.com/downloads/global-mapper/global_mapper14_64bit.zip .
